My friend Bev and I were looking at Hiroshige' s Ukiyoe at Honolulu Academy of Art. The exhibit room was not crowded, and there werjust a few visitors.
We were talking quietly, but suddenly, Bev whispered to me saying, "I hate when someone calls me auntie."
I responded, "What? Really?"
She responds again, "Yes, I don't like it!"
She sounded angry. I started chuckling, "Me neither!!"
I hate to hear that word at the cashier, or anyone who casually calls me auntie.
And Bev asked me, "obasan means auntie, doesn't it?"
Yes, "obasan is same as auntie. I don't want anyone to call me neither obasan nor auntie PERIOD." Now we started smiling again and went back to Hiroshige's nice paintings.
